Gallo-Roman sites not to be missed

The Gallo-Roman amphitheatre

Located on the Left Bank, discover the Gallo-Roman amphitheatre in Saintes, a site that can hold up to 15,000 spectators. It is one of the best preserved in France. A witness to the past, the amphitheatre is an invitation to travel back in time to the heart of Roman Aquitaine.

The Arch of Germanicus and the Abbaye aux Dames

Both located on the Right Bank, you can then continue your walk by the Arch of Germanicus, a Roman monument erected in 18 AD to commemorate the victories of Germanicus over the Germans.

A must-see during a weekend in Saintes, the Arch of Germanicus is an important monument of Roman art in Gaul. It is one of the best-preserved Roman triumphal arches in Europe.

It was listed as a historic monument in 1840.

Then head for the Abbaye aux Dames, a former Benedictine abbey whose abbey church is now a museum. On the way, admire the 18th-century mansions lining the rue Saint-Pierre.

An ecological cruise on the river

Come aboard the Bernard Palissy III for a zero-emission cruise, the only electro-solar boat of its kind in Europe. Sail in silence and admire the sublime scenery all around you, with no impact on the environment.

With a length of 24 metres, the Bernard Palissy III can accommodate up to 10 bicycles and offers a comfortable setting for a ride with family or friends. Soak up the sun on deck or sit back and enjoy the view from inside.
